Off The Ball may be obsessed with English and European football, to the detriment of coverage of the Irish game, but its bright presenters can sometimes go places that RTÉ sports folk don’t realise exist.

At this stage, there is hardly any point in a non-ManU and  non-Liverpool supporter railing against the excesses of the Irish sports media in the run-up to today’s mega game, which surely has re-defined our understanding of hype.

There’s nothing meaningful one can say about this, really. It’s called the ultimate football gift for the ultimate football fan and it’s just… there.

We’re used at this stage to fans of British clubs outnumbering Irish football supporters at summer friendlies, but having a similar scenario with a Romanian team playing in a proper game definitely is something new.

It’s a rare sight, occasioned by the attendance last week (FP was away) of  Irish football fans inside an Irish football ground, to cheer ‘their’ team, Liverpool FC of Engerland, against Irish opposition.
