Euro bandwagon threat to the main event

Man United or Bohs? It’s a no-brainer, isn’t it?

How about Man United in a meaningless stroll against some bunch called an Airtricity League XI, and a Champions’ League game at Dalymount Park. Still a no-brainer, of course.

In the increasingly likely event of a clash, most Irish fans will want to opt to watch the Red Devils stroke the ball around at the Aviva Stadium’s gala football opening, and leave the real European action for those LoI-loving weirdos.

Good diary management work by Neil Ahern in the Indo today. Imagine how many real ManU supporters might have blown it and fallen for a spot of CL bandwagoning at Bohs if he hadn’t pointed out the insane proximity of these two fixtures.

Bohemians will face Welsh champions The New Saints in the second qualification round of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, with the home leg taking place on Tuesday, July 13 at Dalymount Park and the return tie on the Welsh-English border the following Tuesday.

Having disposed of Welsh side Rhyl on a 9-3 aggregate scoreline in the 2008 Intertoto Cup, Bohs will be confident of progressing.

If they do, it could mean a fixture clash with the League of Ireland v Manchester United friendly at the Aviva Stadium on August 4 as the second leg of Bohs’ third-round tie would take place either that very night or the previous night.

When will the League of Ireland, and that useless UEFA bunch, ever learn about Irish footballing priorities?

The FAI and John Delaney naturally will be hoping that the clash will not arise, and praying that Bohs fall at the full hurdle against TNS, lest Irish loyalties are subjected to this difficult and confusing test.
