It’s great to see Kevin Doyle, a product of the League of Ireland, get off the fence and urge people to do their bit for their local football club. Especially in the context of one of those ‘glamour’ friendlies where the home support is likely to be out-numbered by the day-trippers cheering on the visitors.

Doyle told the Daily Mirror (quoted by Elevenaside) advance of the Wexford Youths v Wolves game tonight that it wasn’t just about turning up for ‘glamour’ friendlies:

‘The League is not in a good position at the moment, which is sad to see as my time there played a huge role in my progress.

‘If a game like this can help to build the profile of the Wexford Youths and raise some money for the club then that’s good.

‘But it would be great if people supported their local club week in, week out. Hopefully a lot of people at Ferrycarrig Park on Monday will be at the club’s next league game.’

It almost certainly won’t happen that way, but it’’s a nice thought, and, perhaps, if more of our star exports to the football mainland stuck up for the league the message might start to get through.

  1. Cork City would get 20 000 supporters a week if Roy “greatest living Irishman” Keane said something like this.
