Roy Keane is a ‘national treasure’ in the Emerald Isle, and Ipswich’s friendlies tour is a blatant PR effort to turn Paddy into a tractor boy.

That’s the spin from the East Anglian Times:

The trip to Irish Division One side Finn Harps on Tuesday night was as much of a PR exercise as it was a chance to gain some early pre-season fitness.

Keane still holds megastar status across the Emerald Isle and he was reminded as much during his 24 hours in County Donegal.

Every back page and every radio bulletin hailed Keane’s return to his homeland – specifically to Finn Park, the venue where he made his full debut for Cobh Ramblers almost 20 years ago back in 1989.

And we all thought Roy just wanted to do Irish football clubs a big favour.

Edit: Really shouldn’t have left out the bit about the locals cheering on Ipswich against their own team…

…  every single one of Town’s Irish contingent – Garvan, Delaney, McAuley et al – were given rapturous applause for each meaningful kick of the ball. In a way, the local lads from Finn Harps rather ruined the party.

It’s important to know your place.

to be sure now, that sounds a little bit like sour grapes for some reason!
Ipswich are a pleasant, friendly, provincial little club, with a lot more than just that in common with Irish clubs.
Hands across the water and all that!
And don’t forget the famous(?) Ipswich Republican Army!!!!
    Bottoms up, and chin chin.

I’m sure Ipswich is a great little club. But trying to drum up support on the basis of the manager’s nationality a la Sunderland is a little naff, don’t you think?
And how would Ipswich fans (from Ipswich) view a bunch of English supporters cheering on, say, Barca, against an English club?
